8 Offstage Mistakes That Make Burlesque Performers Look Amateur
The judgements nobody tells you they're making.
As my previous piece, 10 Mistakes that Make Burlesque Performers Look Amateur, proved especially popular, I’m following up with a part two, focusing on offstage considerations where the first focused on onstage missteps.
I do want to make a distinction between ‘unprofessional’ in the sense of conduct, skill and best practice, and amateur as in inexperienced or underdeveloped in this case. I know performers who were communicating, showing up and preparing at a professional level very early on in their careers. Likewise, I’ve seen experienced performers reveal blind spots they may never have consciously considered. That is to say, if you recognise anything you’re doing below, it doesn’t mean you’re not a professional or talented performer. You may simply be unintentionally limiting yourself.
I don’t want to dwell on the obvious things often highlighted: turn in your music and cues on time, show up on time, don’t be a dick backstage, communicate promptly, don’t undercut, etc. Instead, I want to look at presentation and perception, as I did in part one. The signals you send, consciously or otherwise, to producers, peers, media and others who may have a hand in your career progression.

After two decades of watching, reviewing, judging, advising and selecting, I’ve noticed the same patterns emerging again and again, some longstanding, some encouraged by the way social media cultivates and rewards certain behaviours. All of them influence whether you’re viewed as a polished professional, or someone getting in their own way.
So, without prolonging this parade, here are 8 offstage mistakes that make burlesque performers look amateur.
