One of the most frustrating things about burlesque is that performers don’t always progress in proportion to their effort. You can spend years refining skills, investing in costumes, taking workshops and developing acts, yet still struggle to make the leap to bigger or regular gigs.
More often than not, the difference isn’t talent - it’s judgement.
I’ve already talked to you about getting selected, competition strategy, storytelling and construction. This isn’t really about any of those things.
It’s about presentation and perception. The small choices that shape how audiences, producers, peers and bookers perceive you. The signals you send, consciously or otherwise, before you’ve even finished your parade.
After two decades of watching, reviewing, judging, advising and selecting, I’ve noticed the same patterns emerge again and again. Some are easy fixes. Others take time and experience to develop. All of them influence whether you’re viewed as a polished professional, a future headliner, or someone still finding their footing.
